Tip of the week: Google Maps can more than you think

28-05-2010

For sure, you know Google’s map function Google Maps and you probably also use it regularly to check addresses and route descriptions. What you might not be aware of is that anyone, by means of Google’s API, can connect his or her data with Google’s map function. In modern web language, this is called a mashup – a function from which a lot of creative solutions can emanate.

Here are a couple of examples:

Købmand Hansens Feriehusudlejning (Grocer Hansen’s holiday house rental company)
Together with the rental company, we developed a mashup which provides a geographic overview of vacant holiday houses. On the map, it is possible to navigate between all vacant holiday houses at the beach in Henne, Denmark. Try it yourself

Abildskou
Abildskou is the company that controls the bus ‘Linje 888’ which shuttles back and forth between Jutland and Copenhagen. Together we developed a map which makes it easy to find bus stops all over Denmark. Try the map function here

Monopoly
09.09.09 became the date of release of a lot of different things. The most interesting we have come across is Monopoly City Streets which, to put it briefly, is the Monopoly game on Google Maps! All roads are for sale in the world’s biggest Monopoly game and everybody can participate. Experience Monopoly City Streets (because of big interest, the site can be pretty slow).
